چکیده

The importance of trace elements such as zinc is well recognized in the context of metabolic response to injury and wound healing. There is post-injury lowering of zinc as part of the so-called 'triggered' biochemical response to trauma even if the trauma is of relatively modest severity (Stoner, 1984). In the catabolic phase of metabolic response to trauma, which starts 24-48h post-injury, the predominant feature is protein or muscle catabolism resulting in the release of amino acids for synthesis of glucose (gluconeogenesis) and production and excretion of urea nitrogen in the urine. Albumin concentration may fall for up to a week and then takes weeks to recover. The extent of zinc loss, which is linked to proteins, mainly ablumin, correlates very closely with the amount of nitrogen loss in the urine (Cuthbertson et al., 1972). As wound healing is known to be impaired in zinc deficient patients and animals (Hallmans, 1979), a combination of possible existing zinc deficiency and post injury reduction of zinc would be expected to delay wound healing. Hypozincaemia is known to occur in cirrhosis of liver, malabsorption syndrome,

The Effects of Supplemental Zinc and Honey on Wound Healing in Rats

Objective(s) Clinicians have long been searching for ways to obtain "super normal" wound healing. Zinc supplementation improves the healing of open wounds. Honey can improve the wound healing with its antibacterial properties. Giving supplemental zinc to normal rats can increase the wound tensile strength. This work is to study the concurrent effects of zinc and honey in wound healing of norma...

Effect of Anodal and Cathodal Microamperage Electrical Stimulation on Injury Potential and Size of Acute Wound in Guinea Pig

Introduction: It is believed that injury potential has a regulatory role in wound healing process and the application of exogenous electrical stimulation may serve to mimic the natural endogenous bioelectric current so that can improve the wound healing. Up to now, this hypothesis has not been researched in surgically acute wounds. Materials and Methods: Thirty nine male guinea pigs were random...

Evaluation of wound healing and post-operative intra-abdominal adhesions in opium addicted rats

Introduction: Opium addiction can change immune response to Types of stress such as injury or trauma due to alterations in the in secretion status of cytokines in the body. In this study, effects of opium addiction on wound healing and post-operative adhesion bands were assessed after laparotomy. Materials and Methods: Male rats (n=20) were randomly divided into opium addicted (documented with ...

Local Administration of L-Arginine Accelerates Wound Closure

Objective(s) The process of wound healing involves tightly integrated events including inflammation, granulation tissue formation and remodeling. Systemic administration of L-arginine promotes wound healing but its global side effects are undesirable. To confine the action of L-arginine at the site of injury, we tested the effects of local administration of L-arginine on the healing of excisio...
